Singapore the Prehistoric Cave

Hello, Singapore... EVOLVE!

Just some time ago, the country's leaders were saying that it takes time for Singaporeans to accept homosexuality and this is not the time yet, but it will come. As they assured that 377A is staying just to reflect a collective morality's voice and will not be actively enforced, they are fining MediaCorp for airing a show depicting a happy gay couple with a happy baby.

They say it's wrong to air contents which "promotes, justifies or glamourises gay lifestyles", which means if any Singaporean is to receive any media exposure on homosexuality, it has to be condemning in nature. Then how are we going to wait for the day when they open their minds? This is a massive polarisation of public views - using the media to reinforce a discriminatory notion on homosexuality. We are not even allowed to have a public voice to offer the people a second opinion and let them make a conscious decision - is homosexuality really that evil?

I say this is our government's strategy in dealing with everything. The magic bullet. When one has a political opinion that threatens the government's supremacy, one is immediately silenced. Lawsuits and public humiliation, and then bankruptcy. What's there to fight? Where's the democracy? Leading countries of the world promote citizen participation in public policies. Leading educators encourage students to have an opinion. Singapore is the direct opposite. The government wishes for a people that is ignorant and does nothing but follows. Whatever they say about changing is just an excuse. They'll never change.

It's obvious that nothing is going to change. For anything to change, at least something has to be done. If the government is not even doing anything to encourage the change, the change will never happen. Talk about letting nature take its course; talk about allowing the nation to mature on its own - but everything needs the initial push. By standing there and enforcing all these ridiculous discriminatory regulations on homosexuals, the government is contradicting its former accepting tone on the matter. This is counter-productive. By doing so, the government is tuning "nature" against progress, and it's clear where we're heading down 20 years' time.

I've always been talking of leaving Singapore. There have been people trying to talk me to stay, and there're those who try to convince me that something can be done, or that I should at least try. I have decided that there's nothing left for me to try. I don't need to risk a bankruptcy. Come on, I'm human and I'm driven by material gains too, sometimes. What do I gain wasting all my effort on a government that only wants to silence my intelligence over their laughable policies? I'll only lose all that I have, and my life would be miserable. If I leave this place, the Republic of Singapore will be rid of one more criminal who violates its oh-so-righteous 377A of the Penal Code. And I'll get to prosper in my own endeavours without the fear and worry of being sabotaged by strange illogical laws. I have my life, and it doesn't belong here.
